Weddings

Plate 12 · Sulima, Depot Town, 2 September

We would rather do six weddings well than eleven at a run.

That is the whole policy. Everything below is the detail underneath it.

The ledger · last season

Five we were allowed to photograph

  • Low loose arrangements running down a long timber table set for dinner
    0118 May · barn, Saline

Forty guests, one long table, nothing above eye level. Budget $4,900. Cosmos and bupleurum, cut nine days before and still open on the Monday.

  • Wine glasses crowded around a low centrepiece on a dressed table
    0214 June · Riverside Arts

Twelve tables. The couple wanted white; we talked them into eight per cent plum, which is the only reason the photographs are not flat.

  • A white and green hand-tied bouquet with eucalyptus and thistle
    036 July · courthouse, 11am

Bouquet and two buttonholes, $340, collected from the studio door. The smallest job we took all year and one of the better ones.

  • A single pale peony lit against a black ground
    042 August · private house

Peony season had closed, so this is the last box of the year, bought at a price we would not normally pay and charged on at cost.

  • Blush and white garden roses standing in a clear glass vase
    052 September · Depot Town

Ninety guests, no arch, no foam, one install team of three. Out of the room by 2:10pm and back for the strike at midnight.

What the number buys

One visit, one plan, one van

A site visit before you pay anything. A written plan with stem counts, not mood words. Delivery, install, strike the same night or the next morning, and the vessels back in our van rather than your mother's car.

The six questions we always get

What does $4,200 actually cover?

A bouquet, four buttonholes, a ceremony moment, twelve table arrangements and the install. Most couples land between $5,400 and $7,800 once they see the plan. We will tell you before the deposit if your list does not fit the number.

How far ahead do we need to book?

Saturdays in June and September go eleven to fourteen months out. A Thursday in April we can usually take six weeks ahead. The deposit is a third and it holds the date, nothing else.

Can we pick the exact flowers?

You pick the palette and the shape. We pick the stems on the Wednesday, because what is good on 14 June is decided by the weather in May, not by a spreadsheet in November.

Why will you not build an arch?

We will, for $1,900 and up, and we will say first that the money usually does more on the tables where people sit for five hours. If you still want it after that conversation, we build it.

What happens to the flowers afterwards?

We strike them into buckets and they go to the hospice on Washtenaw on the Monday, unless you want them, in which case tell us on the day and we leave them in water by the door.

Do you travel?

Ninety minutes from the studio, which covers Ann Arbor, Detroit, Chelsea, Jackson and most of the lakes. Beyond that the water is out of the stems too long and we would rather say no.
